Audience: Instructional Designers looking to build a portfolio with no coding experience
Responsibilities: Instructional Design, eLearning Design, and Analysis
Tools Used: Articulate Storyline, Camtasia, ElevenLabs
In my current role, I create technical training. Oftentimes, this technical training comes in the form of video demos of software that my company sells. That work is proprietary, of course, but I still wanted to provide a high-level example of that skill in my portfolio.Â
The first thing that came to mind when pondering what software to create a demo for was Google Sites. I know many instructional designers aren't sure what the best tool is to create a portfolio website, and remember how I felt when I first found Google Sites as my solution.
This is only a teaser of what a Google Sites training could look like, but I hope it gets the
point across.
To create this work sample, I first started with the concept. I loaded Google Sites and explored what I wanted to demonstrate, taking note of the steps in the process. Using that information, I created a short script. Since this is such a short and sweet project, I didn't find it necessary to create an outline or storyboard.
I plugged the script into Storyline's Text to Speech feature (which uses ElevenLabs AI technology) to create the AI voice. This cut the audio production time in half, eliminating the need for me to pull out all of my audio equipment, record, and edit my own voice. It will also make updating it in the future much easier. I exported the audio clip to edit it with the video in Camtasia.
After I edited the video and audio content in Camtasia, I exported it. I uploaded it to Youtube for hosting using a private link and viola, here we are.
